Low Carbon

Grow for it sector

In June 2013, Prime Minister David Cameron formally opened London Array, the world’s largest offshore windfarm, part-situated off the coast of Ramsgate.

He said: "This is a great day for Kent and a great day for Britain. London Array has been built by some of the bravest seamen, the most talented engineers and hardest workers. It will bring benefits to Kent for years to come.”

Set to supply half a million UK homes with electricity each year, London Array comprises 175 wind turbines, and is set to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1.4m tonnes each year.

During the four-year construction process, the operational base was headquartered in Ramsgate, and the project made use of East Kent’s highly skilled workforce in the low carbon sector. Around 90 jobs have been created in operations and maintenance for the windfarm, whose investors are DONG Energy, E.ON and Masdar.

London Array is part of a thriving low carbon sector across East Kent. Thanet Earth, the UK’s largest greenhouse complex, provides the vegetables that stock supermarket shelves while also helping power the National Grid.
